Water flows again in Songjiang
WATER was running again in Songjiang District early yesterday morning after supply was cut when a water plant shut down.
About 350,000 families were affected by the accident on Wednesday. They lined up for hours before the neighborhood committee with buckets, water jugs and water bottles, to collect water from tankers and receive bottled water brought in by the Songjiang fire brigade.
The Songjiang No. 2 Water Plant, where the accident occurred, said the leak in its pump room that caused the shutdown was the result of a broken valve.
"The valve didn't work, which caused water to pour into the pump room," said Wang Jie, production and technology director for the plant. "But we did our best and repaired the pumps."
The Songjiang District government said that water supplies began to flow again from 11:40pm on Wednesday and that by 4am yesterday the entire district was reconnected.
"The repairs took a lot less time than expected," said Zhou Ping, an official with the district government.
Officials had expected repairs to take 36 hours or more.
At least the water sellers in Songjiang were happy. The owner of one water supply station in Songjiang, said it sold more than 120 19-liter bottles of water in a short time - usually the shop sells just 10 bottles a day.
