Water supply resumes in Songjiang
TAP water supplies resumed in Shanghai's Songjiang District today after a local water utility carried out urgent repairs.
A leak and equipment failure cut the water supply to 350,000 families in the district's central area since about 5am yesterday.
The six pumps at Songjiang No. 2 Water Plant have been repaired and are functioning normally, Eastday.com reported. A leak caused a machine room to flood and the plant's six pumps to shut down yesterday.
The district government said water supplies started to resume from 11:40pm last night. Supplies were completely restored by 4am today.
"The repairs didn't take as long as expected," said Zhou Ping, a district government official.
A total of 71 fire brigade vehicles from seven districts had been filling trucks at a water source in Sheshan area. They were then sent to residential areas, schools, hospitals and hotels. Water had been sent to all neighborhoods by 9pm yesterday.
Songjiang District's chief apologized to residents.
"I apologize to you for the serious affect on your life and on businesses. Thank you sincerely for your understanding and cooperation," Sun Jianping, Songjiang District chief, said during a live television program last night.
Supermarkets were close to running out of bottled water as residents rushed to stock up, the Eastday report said.
