Wet and humid end to July
JULY looks likely to end on a wet and humid note with rain and higher temperatures predicted for much of this week.
Today and tomorrow will be overcast, with the chance of thunder showers, said the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau yesterday.
Sunnier skies are forecast for Wednesday, but summer rains are set to return on Thursday.
Today’s temperatures should be around 31 to 33 degrees Celsius.
The mercury is forecast to rise to 35 degrees Celsius tomorrow through Thursday, with lows of 27 degrees.
At the end of the week, subtropical high pressure will dominate city weather again.
Late yesterday afternoon, an orange storm alert — the second highest level in a four-tier system — was issued by the bureau.
A yellow gale alert was also issued, the second lowest in a four-tier system. The bureau forecast an 8-level gale was possible within 12 hours with more than 50 millimeters of rain could fall within a three-hour period.
Thunder and lightning arrived over downtown in early evening.
Earlier, the weather bureau in Songjiang District had issued its own orange storm alert.
The slow-moving thunderstorm mainly affected Songjiang in the afternoon, with weather stations there all recording more than 25 millimeters of precipitation by around 3pm. Dongjing station recorded 30.6mm.
