Wet start to holiday likely to continue

SHANGHAI’S Mid-Autumn Festival had a wet start and the rain is expected to continue for the remainder of the holiday under the influence of Typhoon Meranti, which landed in southeast China’s Fujian Province early yesterday.

Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued a yellow rainstorm alert at 5pm yesterday, expecting heavy rain to hit the city overnight and into this morning with falls of up to 40 millimeters in an hour.

Though Meranti is weakening, a second typhoon — Malakas — may affect east coast regions over the weekend and bring more rain and gales to the city, it said.

Temperatures will see little change over the next few days with a high of between 23 to 27 degrees Celsius today.

Meranti disrupted some travel plans, particularly for holidaymakers heading to coastal Fujian and Guangdong.

Fifteen train services scheduled to leave Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station yesterday, most of them for Shenzhen, were canceled, the city’s railway bureau said.

Several flights from Shanghai to Fujian and Guangdong were also canceled.

Several expressways were affected, including the Zhejiang, Fujian and Guangdong sections of the Shenyang-Haikou Expressway, and the Shanghai-Suzhou-Wuxi section of the Shanghai-Chengdu Expressway.

The second day of a garden party in Xuhui District’s Guilin Park, held every year to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, was canceled yesterday due to heavy showers. Wednesday’s opening day was unaffected.
