Wheel offers bird's-eye view of Suzhou Creek

FROM next month, locals will be able to survey the landscape around Suzhou Creek from a Ferris wheel located near the river in Zhabei District.

The Ferris wheel, standing at the intersection of Xizang Road M. and Qufu Road and measuring about 42 meters high, will open to the public on December 18, said Lu Ning, of the Joy City Mall, which set up the wheel.

The wheel, which is promoting the newly built shopping center, will be free for people to take a ride between 10am to 10pm. It can carry 96 people.

The wheel will be a new experience for many locals, after plans to build a 200-meter wheel north of the Bund were dropped years ago.

In 2002, the city proposed building a Ferris wheel providing visitors with a bird's-eye view of the Bund landscape. But experts said the proposed attraction for the northern Bund renovation project was inappropriate, as the area was supposed to serve the modern shipping industry.

The temporary Ferris wheel will be torn down after three or four months, and what the area will be used for then has not yet been decided, Lu said.
