Winter begins

LIDONG is the 19th of 24 solar terms and marks the beginning of winter according to the Chinese lunar calendar.

In old times, people believed winter was the time to store nutrition for spring. Many Chinese people chose to have a big meal with several nourishing foods on lidong because it was believed to be particularly good for their health.

Stewed mutton and spare-ribs with herbs are good winter dishes.
