Winter is here but warm days to remain

IT is officially winter.
After five straight days when the daily average temperature stayed below 10 degrees Celsius, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau yesterday declared that winter had finally set in.
That makes December 3 the first day of winter. It arrived two days later than last year, when it hit the city on December 1. In Shanghai’s weather history, the earliest winter was on November 13, and the most delayed arrival was on December 21.
But though it is winter, the warm days will not leave this week and the highs will remain in low to mid teens.
There will be a high pressure today that will ensure dry and cloudy skies. However, due to the increase of southwesterly moisture, expect some rains between Wednesday and Friday. Skies will clear up at the weekend with a possibility of smog.
It will be a high of 13 degrees and a low of 7 degrees today. It will get warmer tomorrow with the high climbing to 15 and the low to 11. The warm condition is likely to last until Thursday.
On Friday, the mercury will start to dip by 2 to 3 degrees with the low below 10.
Thanks to the easterly winds, the smoggy condition is expected to go today. After a polluted weekend, Shanghai woke up to thick fog today and moderate smog with the air quality index peaking at 199 at 4am, when PM2.5 concentration was recorded at some 150 micrograms per cubic meter, fitting into the moderately polluted level.
The visibility in parts of coastal Fengxian District was cut to only 400 meters.
The AQI later fell into 170s between 6am to 9am and plunged below 100 in the afternoon.
The smog remains a threat throughout the week.
Monday also marked the solar term Daxue, also known as heavy snow, which means the chilly weather is on the way with the increasing possibility of snowfall.
