Winter low for Chongming

TEMPERATURES plunged to minus 5 degrees Celsius on Shanghai’s Chongming Island yesterday.

Lakes and rivers in downtown areas were covered in ice, with a low of minus 0.6 degrees in Xujiahui, the coldest recorded in downtown areas so far this winter.

Suburban districts saw temperatures drop to around minus 4 degrees yesterday but Chongming outdid them all.

However, sunshine later in the day made it feel a little warmer and that should continue today with temperatures reaching a high of 11 degrees, said Kong Chunyan, chief forecaster with the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

Cloudy conditions will persist throughout the weekend but tomorrow will see temperatures ranging between 5 and 15 degrees, Kong said.

There will be some drizzle early next week, she said, but temperatures could rise as high as 17 degrees in some areas.

Air quality in the city was “good” yesterday with the Air Quality Index around 98. However, this morning should see “slightly polluted” conditions.
