Woman dies on crossing

AN elderly woman died after being struck by a taxi while crossing a road in the Pudong New Area yesterday morning.
The 82-year-old was hit by a Qiangsheng cab on a zebra crossing, witnesses said.
The accident took place about 7:45am at the intersection of Pudong Road S. near Eshan Road. The victim, who was not named, was heading back home from a wet market. She died at the scene.
Witnesses said the taxi was traveling at high speed but was unclear whether the woman had tried to cross the road while the light was red. Traffic police said responsibility for the accident was still under investigation. It caused congestion for an hour.
Meanwhile, Hongkou District police said no other vehicle was involved in an accident early last Saturday morning in which a soccer fan was seriously injured.
Wu Zhaoming, the chief drummer with a Shanghai Shenhua Football Club fans' club, was said to be drunk while riding his motorcycle in the bicycle lane of Dalian Road W. near Dongjiangwan Road. He suffered head injuries when his motorcycle hit the sidewalk and crashed into a power distributor box.
Wu's motorcycle was unlicensed, but the punishment will not be enacted at present as he was still in a coma yesterday.
