Women's Day discounts help set Metro record
SHANGHAI’S Metro yesterday set a record by ferrying 8.94 million passengers, a day before the world marks the International Women’s Day.
The previous record was set on the last day of 2013 when the subway network carried 8.90 million passengers.
On March 8 last year, 8.486 million commuters took the Metro.
Last year, the Women’s Day fell on a Friday and many employers gave half-day off to their women employees, who made full use of it by taking the network. Department stores cashed in with discount deals and other related promotions.
It was the same this year too. Malls and stores in the city were already offering discounts before the Women’s Day falls on today. Pleasant weather also meant more people hit the streets ahead of the weekend.
