You wait for one line, and along come three of them
THE city is expected to have three new Metro lines put into operation next year.
Line 17 was “linked up” yesterday morning, the Metro operator said, with the third phase of Line 8 and the east extension of the third phase of lines 9 and 17 coming later.
The three lines will add a further 55 kilometers to the network.
The completion of Line 17 will be good news for residents in suburban Qingpu District, who will find it easier to reach downtown.
Currently, Qingpu only has one Metro station, East Xujing Station on Line 2. Most residents have to commute by buses to the city center.
The 35.3-kilometer long new line starts from Hongqiao Railway Station to Oriental Land, with 13 stations.
Another line to be launched next year is the east section of the third phase of Line 9, which connects Yanggao Road M. and Caolu with nine stations.
The third phase of Line 8, between Shendu Highway and Huizhen Road, will mainly run through Pujiang Town in Minhang District. It will serve as a medium capacity transit system to supplement Line 8.
It will be the city’s first Metro line to run on rubber tires, which makes for quieter rides and less jostling.
A further four lines — the south extension of Line 5, the second phases of lines 10 and 13, and the third phase of Line 13 — are expected to be linked up in 2017. Construction of Lines 14, 15 and the first phase of Line 18 are also progressing.
Meanwhile, people wanting to hang out with friends or go shopping before the New Year holiday have some good news too, as the operating hours of lines 1, 2 and 8 will be extended by 30 minutes tonight, the last working day of 2016. Metro operating hours will be extended by 80 minutes tomorrow for New Year’s Eve events, according to the operator.
The extended service will not, however, cover the east section of Line 2, between Guanglan Road and Pudong International Airport stations today and tomorrow, and Nanjing Road E. Station on Line 2 will not be included on Saturday’s extensions.
Nanjin Road E. Station on lines 2 and 10, and Exit 1 of Xintiandi Station on lines 10 and 13 will be closed from 8pm tomorrow, due to safety concerns.
Today is likely to hit a record high for Metro traffic, with an expected 11.7 million trips, the operator added.
Operating hours of 39 bus routes running within 100 meters of stations on lines 1,2 and 8 will also be extended.
