1 dead in fire at Hongqiao apartment

A 72-YEAR-OLD man died in a fire yesterday morning.
The fire broke out in an apartment on the 6th floor of a residential building on Hongqiao Road at around 10am.
Neighbors called the firefighters after seeing heavy smoke coming out from the apartment.
Firefighters put out the fire soon but found the old man, surnamed Lai, lying dead on the floor.
Neighbors said Lai had lived alone for decades, while his son and friends visited him frequently.
The man had trouble walking and was always drunk, said Zhao Junrong, a community official. “He was also a heavy smoker, I think it was alcohol and tobacco that killed him,” Zhao said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
