10 evacuated following high-rise blast

ONE person was injured and 10 evacuated following an explosion and fire in a tower block in Minhang District.

A series of blasts occurred at around 10pm on Monday on the 10th floor of a high-rise residential building in the Grand Shanghai International Garden complex on Caobao Road.

Firefighters arriving at the scene to tackle the blaze set off by the explosion evacuated 10 residents, including four elderly people and three South Korean nationals.

A 58-year-old Chinese resident, who was at home alone, suffered third-degree burns. It is believed the explosions occurred in his apartment.

The blaze spread to neighboring apartments and damaged the balconies and external walls on the 11th and 12th floor.

It was extinguished within 40 minutes.

The explosions were reportedly caused by liquefied gas detonation.

Smaller detonations were heard after the first explosion, said neighbors, who fled their homes in their nightwear as corridors filled with smoke.
