10 times compensation for customer sold out-of-date drinks

A LOCAL supermarket has been ordered to repay a customer 880 yuan (US$143) and give him another 8,800 yuan in compensation after it sold out-of-date drinks to him, the Changning District People’s Court said yesterday.

The customer, surnamed Yan, bought 10 bottles of a plum drink priced 88 yuan each on March 8 this year.

But he discovered the drinks were out-of-date and filed a lawsuit, demanding a repayment and compensation of 10 times the cost.

The supermarket claimed that the manufacturer mistakenly used some old packaging, but the court did not accept this.
