11 jailed for car license plate fraud
ELEVEN members of a gang that forged documents to acquire license plates were yesterday sentenced to prison terms of between five years and life at the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court.
The defendants were found guilty of illegally obtaining more than 4,000 car plates over a period of nine years and selling them on for a combined 220 million yuan (US$34.5 million).
The ringleader was identified as Fu Xiaogang, a former tax official, who was given a life sentence.
Prosecutors said Fu and the other gang members — who included a number of tax officials — stole or forged official seals and used them to counterfeit documents.
Another of the defendants, Wu Weifeng, joined the gang in 2013, after initially blackmailing the other members for 8 million yuan between 2008 and 2012.
