12 detained over wonder cure ‘scam’
TWELVE suspects who allegedly cheated elderly people by selling them a fake wonder cure have been detained, Fengxian District's People's Procuratorate said yesterday.
The suspects allegedly made more than 1 million yuan (US$150,000) from the scam, which was launched in March, prosecutors said.
The gang allegedly took victims on a sightseeing trip that included a medical checkup conducted by a supposedly famous doctor. He would then tell them they had a condition that could be treated with a box of “medicine” that they were sold for an exorbitant 6,980 yuan. The medicine was in fact a 100-yuan box of effervescent tablets.
An elderly resident surnamed Zhu said he was taken on a sightseeing trip to Tonglu County in neighboring Hangzhou City on April 26, after a health food seller called him and told him it was a free gift for old customers.
Zhu said most of the tourists were elderly people like him.
After a bit of sightseeing, they were taken for physical examinations at a hotel. the “doctor” sold Zhu two boxes of “world-renowned cure-all tablets” for 13,960 yuan.
The prosecutors said the gang was organized by Zhang Weichuan, who recruited six people to perpetrate the scam, posing as tour guides and doctors.
Zhang also worked with eight health food distributors to obtain information on potential victims' health problems and finances.
