12 prostitutes held during raid in Qibao
SHANGHAI police detained 12 prostitutes during a raid in two villages in Qibao Town in Minhang District. Three men who were tasked to look out for police were also caught.
Prostitution has been a problem in the two villages, Wangjiachang and Dongshengtang, for many years.
Most of the prostitutes are between 20 and 30 years old. In many cases it was their husbands who kept a look out for police.
They plied their trade from early morning till 8 or 9pm in the evening.
Police said the prostitutes charged as little as 30 to 50 yuan (US$4 to US$8) and mainly targeted middle-aged and old men.
Police claimed they regularly carried out raids in an effort to crack down on prostitution. They said they had caught 87 suspects last year and four at the beginning of this year.
It was hard to eradicate the problem because prostitutes who look for customers on the roadside can only be detained for five days as per law, or fined up to 500 yuan, police said.
Also, the police found it hard to track down the prostitutes because they did not stick to one place — or road — for a long time.
Police have promised to keep monitoring the areas and put more pressure on landlords who lease their houses or apartments to the prostitutes.
