12 sailors missing as boat sinks
TWO sailors were saved and 12 were missing after a Kiribati ship sank near the Yangtze River Estuary.
The vessel was on its way from Nantong, Jiangsu Province, to Busan, South Korea.
Shanghai Maritime Bureau said its rescue center had received a report from a Panama-registered boat at 0:55am yesterday, whose crew said they had saved two sailors in the water near the Yangtze estuary.
The sailors’ ship was registered in the Republic of Kiribati, an island in the western Pacific.
The ship was suspected to have been involved in a collision before sinking.
The bureau sent five rescue boats to the scene and found an abandoned lifeboat near to the sunken ship.
The stricken vessel was said to be almost 100 meters long and was carrying 4,850 tons of goods.
