14 detained over coffee shop scam
FOURTEEN people suspected of operating an online dating scam have been arrested on fraud charges, Songjiang People’s Procuratorate said yesterday.
The seven men and seven women are accused of arranging “dates” — which turned out to be stings at a coffee shop in Songjiang District — with men they befriended over the Internet, prosecutors said.
In one case, a man surnamed Song was allegedly charged more than 9,000 yuan (US$1,380) for wine, snacks and tea after meeting one of the women at the cafe in December last year.
Prosecutors said that Song was duped into paying over the odds for cheap wine that had been disguised as a high-quality brand.
The gang is accused of making about 70,000 yuan from multiple victims over a two-week period.
