14 return to city from earthquake-hit Nepal

Fourteen Shanghai travelers arrived back in the city yesterday morning from earthquake-hit Nepal.

They took two China Eastern Airlines flights from Nepal’s capital Kathmandu to Shanghai, via Kunming, capital of southwest china’s Yunnan Province.

The group, among the first Chinese to return following Saturday’s quake, had been near the worst-hit area.

A passenger surnamed Chen described when the earthquake struck.

“We saw bricks falling, like in a scene from a disaster movie. Everything collapsed,” she told reporters.

Meanwhile, two of China’s largest travel agencies have halted trips to Nepal in the wake  of the quake.

China International Travel Service and Ctrip said their customers in the region had been tracked down and would be flown home as soon as possible.

Ctrip said one of its customers had suffered slight head injuries but gave no further details.

A total of 683 Chinese tourists were stranded in Nepal following Saturday’s earthquake, according to the China National Tourism Administration.

A 62-member search and rescue team, plus six dogs, has gone to Nepal’s capital Kathmandu.

Chinese airlines flew 7 flights from Nepal yesterday, bringing back some 660 people. The earthquake death toll has exceeded 2,200.
