16 detained over ‘fake’ cosmetic treatments

SIXTEEN people have been detained on suspicion of selling unlicensed beauty products in Shanghai, police in Xuhui District said yesterday.
The products include whitening and botox injections, they said.
Four of the suspects are alleged to have provided the injections to the public through a clinic that was registered to operate, they said.
Police said they found about 11,000 “shots” that were allegedly owned by the 16 suspects. They were likely made in Taiwan, South Korea, the United States and Europe, and were probably smuggled into the city.
The products had a street value of more than 3 million yuan (US$460,000), police said.
“The shots in question are not found on the approved list of medicine in China, and even if they have been approved in other countries, they’re considered to be fake medicine here,” said Wang Juan, the police officer in charge of the case.
