16% increase in number investigated over corruption

A TOTAL of 368 people have been investigated by city prosecutors in connection with 294 corruption cases between January and September.

This is up more than 16 percent on the same period last year, the Shanghai People’s Procuratorate announced yesterday.

It did not say how many of those investigated had to date been charged or had appeared in court.

Those investigated included 34 people suspected of 27 cases of misconduct, with 20 suspected of extremely serious violations, said Wu Sheng, deputy director of the anti-corruption bureau of the procuratorate.

Prosecutors investigated 268 corruption cases involving sums of more than 50,000 yuan (US$ 8,163).

The list also includes 32 suspects who are high ranking government officials or company executives.

These included Wang Zongnan, former president of Shanghai Bright Food Co Ltd, who was charged last week with taking bribes of nearly 2.7 million yuan and embezzling some 190 million yuan.

Corruption investigations included 36 cases alleged have happened in Party or governmental offices, law enforcement organizations and judicial departments. These involved 36 people — up 44 percent on last year.

Meanwhile, 129 people have been investigated in connection with the abuse of power in sectors including charity, education and health.
