162 bird species found in city parks

Some 162 species of wild birds, including 80 with protected status, have been found through a long-term monitoring effort at four of the city's largest parks, wildlife officials said yesterday.

Carried out by the Shanghai Wildlife Protection Office, the monitoring lasted five years - from 2007 to 2011 - in four major downtown parks: Daning Lingshi Park in Zhabei District, Shanghai Botanical Garden in Xuhui District, Century Park in Pudong New Area and Gongqing Forest Park in Yangpu District.

A total of 65,133 birds were spotted, among which 68 are listed as protected by the country and another 12 are protected by the city.

"About 80 percent of the birds living downtown are resident ones," said Pei En'le, director of the office.

"A few winter migrant birds were spotted but there were hardly any summer migrant birds," Pei said. The city's environment is not considered friendly to birds, especially migrant birds, according to Pei.
