17 phone scam gang suspects arrested
SEVENTEEN telephone scam suspects have been arrested for duping old people to buy cheap and fake medicines and profiting by more than 1.5 million yuan (US$240,000), Shanghai police said yesterday.
One of the victims of the gang, which was based in northeastern China’s Jilin City, Jilin Province, was a woman surnamed Wu who lives in rural Shanghai’s Jinshan District.
Wu called police after losing 10,000 yuan to a scammer from the gang who, claiming to be an official of the “National Chronical Disease Prevention and Treatment Center” in Beijing, sold her “super effective medicine” for the heart treastment.
Police said there were at least 1,000 such victims of the scam around the country.
The gang’s office in Jilin was raided last week and police found more than 2,000 packs of illegal medicines.
Suspects surnamed Han and Lin allegedly owned up that they had been operating the scam since March.
