18 accused sentenced in eight cases

EIGHTEEN people were sentenced to jail yesterday in eight cases over food and drug safety issues, including producing and marketing poisonous food and selling counterfeit products of famous trademarks.

The Shanghai Higher People's Court said harmful foods in the cases include toxic industrial salt, fake healthcare products, prescription drugs, liquors and cigarettes.

In one case, a man who sold bogus Amway Nutrilite products worth more than 6.06 million yuan (US$962,210) was sentenced to six and a half years' jail and fined 800,000 yuan. The convict, Chen Youzhi, opened three online stores on Taobao.com, China's biggest e-commerce platform, selling fake Amway Nutrilite products.
