18 detained in fake car plate crackdown
EIGHTEEN suspects have been detained for producing and selling fake temporary car plates in the largest case of its kind in Shanghai since the beginning of the crackdown on traffic offenses in March, police in Songjiang District said yesterday.
Over 40,000 fake plates were found in a recent raid in Putuo and Jiading districts, where seven suspects were detained by the police. The remaining 11 were picked up in Zhejiang, Hunan and other parts of Shanghai, police said.
The racket caters to car owners who have not succeeded in obtaining car plates in competitive local auctions and have used up their legal quota for temporary plates.
Drivers can apply for a legal temporary plate at the vehicle management offices of the traffic police for 5 yuan (80 US cents). Sellers of fake plates, however, demand 300 to 600 yuan, police said.
Drivers found using fake plates face up to 15 days of detention and a 5,000 yuan fine, while producers of the plates face prison time if they forge the seals of public security authorities.
Police said counterfeit temporary plates vary significantly in quality, but most are discernibly different from authentic ones.
