18 volunteers head to Xinjiang
EIGHTEEN local volunteers left for northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region yesterday to assist in a development program.
The volunteers — their average being 63 — are skilled in health care, education and social work, according to the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau.
They will stay in Zepu, Shache and Bachu counties in Kashgar and Karamay City of the autonomous region for more than two months and provide medical assistance.
Liu Hongdi, a retired ophthalmic surgeon, was making his fifth trip to the region.
A “farewell ceremony” was held yesterday morning in the presence of their relatives.
The city has sent 317 volunteers to the autonomous region over the last 13 years since the program was launched.
