19 detained for forging car plates
NINETEEN suspects accused of forging and selling fake temporary car plates in two separate cases have been detained, Shanghai police said yesterday.
Several car dealerships across the city have been implicated in the racket, in which fake plates were produced in Shanghai and other cities.
Car owners without an official plate in Shanghai can apply for a temporary paper one no more than three times, but they can also apply up to three times in other provinces.
As Shanghai plates are notoriously hard to obtain, more and more people are getting temporary plates from other cities.
In one case, car dealers in Baoshan and Jiading districts allegedly sent the license numbers of people looking for temporary plates to accomplices in Anhui Province who purchased fake blank plates from Jiangsu Province, printed them out with the drivers’ information and mailed them to Shanghai.
In the other case, a car dealer in Putuo District allegedly produced fake temporary plates at his dealership and sold them to fellow car dealers in Xuhui and Huangpu districts.
The fake temporary plates were sold for 600 yuan (US$92) to 1,200 yuan to local car owners, police said.
Over 700 fake plates were found in police raids.
Shanghai police recently announced that cars with non-local temporary plates will be banned from using roads inside the Outer Ring Road from April 10.
