2 Algerians get 10 years for stealing coats on Nanjing Road
TWO Algerian men have been sent to prison for shoplifting more than 1.4 million yuan (US$219,000) worth of leather jackets, the Jing’an District People’s Court said yesterday.
Chougrani Abd El Hakim, 57, was sentenced to 10 years and nine months, and his accomplice Lahres Sid Ahmed, 50, to 10 years for their roles in the theft of 19 jackets between March 19 and 23.
The priciest item pilfered by the pair was a crocodile-skin leather coat that was on sale at the Stefano Ricci clothes store on Nanjing Road W. at a fraction under 1 million yuan, the court said.
According to prosecutors, the two men, who run clothing stores in their home country, arrived in Shanghai on March 17. Two days later, they began their shoplifting spree in Jing’an, Huangpu and the Pudong New Area.
On each occasion, Lahres’ job was to distract the shop assistant, while Chougrani secreted the jackets in his bag and exited the store, the court said.
The two men were identified with the help of footage from surveillance cameras and traced to a hotel in Hongkou District. They were arrested on March 24 as they were planning to leave the country, police said at the time.
