2 arrested for bleach rule breach
A COUPLE from Songjiang District has been charged with using hydrogen peroxide to whiten chicken feet sold as food.
The chemical is banned in food production, Songjiang District People’s Procuratorate said yesterday.
Husband Xing and his wife Jiang said they started using it when they discovered that bright-white chicken feet could be sold at a premium.
Gu Zhenhua, vice director of the city’s food and drug administration, told Shanghai Daily yesterday that local authorities have been working hard to crack down on the use of hydrogen peroxide in food production. The chemical is widely used by vendors of chicken feet and cow’s stomachs, he said.
Prosecutors yesterday released details of seven food safety violations involving 11 people, and said several eateries have been closed for using hydrogen peroxide.
