2 arrested in Putuo over admission fraud

TWO men have been arrested for defrauding parents by promising to help them enroll their children into top schools, prosecutors in Putuo District said.
Public schools in Shanghai only admit students living in nearby neighborhoods while private schools have a tough selection process. Parents, in the hope of getting their children to the best schools, fall prey to scamsters who promise them admission to schools — for a price.
Several families shelled out several thousands of yuan to two people surnamed Yang and Jiang for admission.
A man surnamed Zhao paid 5,000 and 7,000 yuan separately to a man surnamed Yang.
After the payment was made, Yang gave Zhao an admission letter which had the name and seal of the kindergarten. But when he took his daughter to the school in September last year, he was told the letter was fake.
Zhao reported the matter to the police. Yang told police that he simply downloaded an admission notice from the Internet and used a fake stamp.
In another case, a woman surnamed Wang and some of her friends also fell victims to the con game. Wang’s husband met a woman surnamed Jiang at a barbershop who also claimed to have contacts at the education bureau.
Wang paid 25,000 yuan to Jiang and also introduced her to other parents from whom she charged 30,000 and 50,000 respectively.
Interviews were arranged for the kids with the schools. Jiang later told prosecutors that she arranged the interview by simply calling up the school.
Both Yang and Jiang were charged with fraud.
