2 detained for ‘taking advantage’ of website
TWO fraud suspects have been detained for making more than 140,000 yuan (US$21,000) by taking advantage of loopholes in a leading Chinese restaurant review website’s accounting system, police said yesterday.
The suspect surnamed Yu, who owned a wine shop in Xianning City in Hubei Province, and his accomplice surnamed Xu, who ran a snack shop in Xianning, allegedly manipulated customers’ accounts at their shops to get “double refunds” from the website, which is based in Shanghai.
The website has a 24-hour refund policy for users who pay their bills through its app, and once the refund is paid from the restaurant’s account, the website reimburses the restaurant.
Police said the suspects made 10 fraudulent payments to claim excessive refunds in the course of one day and then shut down their businesses so that the website no longer had access to their accounts.
The fraud took place at the end of last year, but the website only discovered what had occurred last month, police said.
Police said that the website operated its refund policy, but now reviewed its balance sheets much more regularly.
