2 detained over restaurant scam
TWO men suspected of using credit card information taken from diners at a restaurant where they worked to steal at least 1 million yuan (US$160,000) have been detained, police in Hongkou District said yesterday.
They allegedly swiped the diners’ cards through fake POS readers to record their information.
At least 50 people, including foreign nationals, who dined at two restaurants near Zhongshan Park and a restaurant on Huaihai Road between September last year and May failed to notice that their cards were re-swiped with a fake reader after their transaction was completed, police said.
Liu Xiaoping, an economic crime detective in charge of the case, said they first became aware of the scam when they noticed that some victims of credit card fraud had dined at the same restaurant and had their cards swiped with the same POS machine.
“Restaurants require waiters to sign the receipts, which gave us further clues about who brought the machine to the victims, but it turned out that the waiter was using a fake identity,” Liu said.
“It’s a common scam and that’s why many fraudsters quit after only a few days.”
The suspect, surnamed Yang, had his cover blown when police found that he had used a membership card displaying his real identity when he checked into a local hotel.
Yang and another suspect surnamed Chen, who are from the southern Chinese province of Guangdong, were caught last month in their Shanghai hotel room just before they were about to catch a train to their hometown.
In the raid, police officers found seven card readers, a large amount of personal credit card information, 20 fake identity cards and 10 fake health certificates, which are necessary when applying for employment at restaurants.
