2 detained over train ticket scam
A local man and woman were taken into custody yesterday on suspicion of running a ticket scam at Shanghai South Railway Station, police said.
The pair, masquerading as a Japanese man and his local friend, preyed on tourists by asking them to buy tickets for them, police said.
The man, surnamed Chen, would claim he had only Japanese money, but after the victims had bought the tickets, his accomplice, surnamed Zhang, would pretend to go to an ATM to get cash to repay their benefactors.
But the notes they handed over were fake, police said.
Once the victims had left the scene, the pair would claim refunds on the tickets or resell them, they said.
The suspects are alleged to have made about 10,000 yuan (US$1,600).
