2 foreigners caught in counterfeit cards racket
Two South Asians have been detained for withdrawing more than 500,000 yuan (US$82,638) by using counterfeit credit cards, police said yesterday.
In early December, several banks in Shanghai found white cards in their automated teller machines (ATMs).
The white cards are cloned plastic cards without any information on them but with magnetic strips on the back.
Police did not reveal the nationalities of the two suspects except for saying they are from South Asia.
On December 16, a bank employee spotted a foreigner on the surveillance video withdrawing cash using a white card at the ATM on Shimen No. 1 Road in Jing’an District and informed police.
The foreigner was detained on the spot and 18 counterfeit credit cards and 5,000 yuan in cash were seized from him.
At 11:30pm the same day, police captured another suspect at a hotel room and found 414 fake credit cards and more than 500,000 yuan in cash and tools for counterfeiting cards.
The two suspects withdrew cash from multiple ATMs in Shanghai using the counterfeited cards.
Visa Inc confirmed that 96 credit cards were used by the suspects at teller machines in Shanghai to withdraw equivalent of US$25,677.78 in cash.
Some of the white cards were swallowed by the ATMs because the issuing bank does not provide withdrawal service on credit card. Police are still investigating the case.
