2 jailed for robbing US dollars
THE Changning District People’s Court yesterday sentenced two men to 14 years in jail for robbing people by offering them foreign currency exchange.
The duo cheated a person of US$276,000, the court said.
The two men, 51-year-old Zhou and 62-year-old Meng, got in touch with a person surnamed Zhang, who wanted to exchange RMB into US dollars urgently in May last year. To win Zhang’s trust, they did fair business twice, but on the third occasion, the two grabbed the US$180,000 and ran away after locking Zhang inside the flat.
Meng was caught in Huzhou, Zhejiang Province, on May 14 and Zhou in the same province the next day.
Police recovered US$92,000 from them. The court has advised people to exchange foreign currency in banks to avoid getting into trouble.
