2 men murder mother and son during robbery
TWO migrant workers have been charged with a robbery in which they allegedly killed a mother and son, prosecutors said yesterday.
The suspects, Wang Sheng and Xu Shuai, worked for a teahouse owner, surnamed Zhu, who asked them to help evict the aunt and cousin of a man, surnamed Li, from an apartment after Li failed to repay a 300,000 yuan (US$45,593) loan. Li had put up the apartment as collateral.
When they first went to the apartment, Wang and Xu learned that the cousin had two sets of rare coins worth around 200,000 yuan and decided to steal them.
On the evening of September 29, 2009, the pair returned to the apartment while the cousin was at home alone.
Xu strangled the cousin, and Wang took part in the killing, prosecutors said.
The pair searched the apartment but found only 3,300 yuan in cash. To cover up their crime, they waited for the aunt to return home and murdered her, prosecutors said.
They returned the next day and dismembered the bodies, putting the parts into two suitcases and transporting them by bus to their hometown in Anhui Province.
Wang and Xu tried to disguise any smell from the bodies by spraying the suitcases with perfume.
The pair decided to return to Shanghai to search for the coins again. On returning, they found that the apartment had been sealed by police. Then they turned to their former employer, Zhu, for money.
Zhu refused to help them so the pair tied him up and robbed him of 10,000 yuan.
Once Zhu got free, he called the police who caught Wang - Xu remained at large.
Wang was sentenced to 10 years and three months in prison for robbery. While he was serving his sentence, he confessed his and Xu's previous crime to prison officials.
Police discovered the body parts and Xu was caught in north China's Tianjin City.
