2 new towns for Disney, jetliner projects

NEW towns are to be built around Shanghai Disney Resort and the production center of China’s C919 airliner, officials said yesterday.

Two large towns with autonomous management rights will support development at the Disney and Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China projects, said Sun Jiwei,  governor of the Pudong New Area.

Chuansha, Liuzao and Zhuqiao towns in suburban Pudong will be reorganized into Chuansha New Town, with the Disney resort as its core area.

And Zhuqiao Town will develop around C919 production, according to a plan with the Pudong government.

Apartments for professionals, community facilities and other supporting amenities will be built around the projects within the new towns.

Covering 3.9 square kilometers, the Disney resort is being built in the Chuansha Town near Pudong International Airport.

The resort will blend classic Disney storytelling with characters and attractions tailored for China, say officials.

Subways, new residential communities, parking lots and other supporting facilities are being built for the resort.

China will start to assemble the C919 — the first domestically developed single-aisle passenger aircraft — in Zhuqiao Town this year.

The test flight center will also be based in the town.

Establishing these towns is a major part of the government’s institutional reform, which will see more autonomous towns for major projects and special zones in certain industrial regions.

The former World Expo 2010 site and the city’s Lingang area will be among the first batch of development zones.
