2 prosecuted for taking bribes

A former university official and a former senior lawmaker have been prosecuted over graft charges, according to Shanghai People’s Procuratorate.

Jiang Jianming, former deputy president of Donghua University, was accused of taking bribes and embezzling public funds.

Hua Dongping, former vice chairman of Hongkou District People’s Congress, was accused of taking bribes, covering up overseas assets and destroying evidence, such as accounting reports.

Prosecutors said Jiang had been the chairman of a company affiliated to the university from 2002 to 2014, over which period Hua was assigned to be general manager of another company affiliated to the university.

They abused their positions to take huge bribes and embezzled large amounts of money from the companies for personal profits. When auditors launched investigations in 2013, Hua destroyed the accounting books, prosecutors said.

They added that Hua had opened a bank account in Hong Kong in 2007 but didn’t declare it to authorities.
