2 runners suffer heatstroke

TWO male runners suffered heatstroke during the Shanghai Haiwan Half Marathon in Fengxian District yesterday.

According to doctors from Fengxian District Central Hospital, heatstroke cases are rare in April. One runner was said to be in a stable condition after being sent to the hospital, while the other was kept in an emergency room for treatment.

The race, held in Fengxian’s Haiwan Resort, featured a total of 3,000 runners. One of them, Lu Lilian, said the weather was scorching, but water and fruit supplies were plentiful.

Sunday’s highest temperature reached 27 degrees Celsius. With more long-distance running events to be held in the city, runners are reminded to prepare themselves for changing temperatures.

“We have made plans in case of both extremely hot and cold weather conditions on the race day,” said Li Li, an employee with Donghao Lansheng Event Management, the organizer of Shanghai International Half Marathon. The marathon, to be held in the Pudong New Area on Sunday, will feature 15,000 runners.

Water spray facilities will be arranged along the 21-kilometer route to help to cool the runners down. Ice buckets and icy sponges will be on hand, too.

When it comes to very cold conditions, organizers will remind runners to fully warm up before the race and provide ginger tea at the finish line.
