2 sentenced to prison in phone card fraud

TWO men were convicted of fraud for illegally obtaining and selling 261 SIM cards and causing China Telecom unpaid bills of more than 580,000 yuan (US$92,000), the Baoshan District People's Court said yesterday.

The convicts Yang Bo and Cao Xin were sentenced to four years and four and a half years in prison and fined 9,000 yuan for contract fraud.

Prosecutors said Yang applied for 261 SIM cards with forged documents at four China Telecom outlets between September and November last year. He then asked Cao to sell these cards and 15 complementary cellphones.

In one China Telecom outlet, Yang pretended to be an employee of an interior design company and got 39 SIM cards, which produced bills of up to 67,000 yuan.

China Telecom employees reported to police after failing to find Yang and his bogus interior design company, the prosecutors said.

Police captured Yang and Cao last December and this February.
