216 weddings from singles event

MORE than 200 couples who met through the city’s largest matchmaking event have gone on to tie the knot, according to organizers.

Almost 200,000 singles have attended five massive gatherings since November, 2011, the Shanghai Matchmaking Association said this week.

And follow-up surveys with matchmaking agencies found that 216 couples who met there have since married.

The actual figure may be significantly higher as some couples did not register while others are reluctant to admit that they met their partner at a matchmaking event, said Zhou Juemin, director of the association.

According to the association, between 7 and 10 percent of singles attending events said afterward that they intended to date someone they met there.

Just over 41 per cent of those attending were aged between 31 to 40, while almost the same percentage were aged between 24 and 30, it added.

The sixth Shanghai Love and Marriage Fair will be held at the World Expo Park in the Pudong New Area over the weekend of December 20-21.

Applications open on Tuesday and places are limited to singletons aged under 40 who can provide proof — such as their hukou, permanent residence permit— to show that they are single.

Admission for singles is free but parents who wish to chaperone their offspring are charged 50 yuan (US$8).

For the first time, organizers are setting up a specific area for women teachers and nurses.

“We noticed that a large number of women teachers over 30 are still single,” Zhou said.

She said this is partly because “they have high requirements for partners and the fact that they have degrees tends to scare off men with lower educational backgrounds.”

Many nurses set their sights on doctors, claimed Zhou, but their aren’t enough to go round. Working shifts also makes it more difficult for them to find Mr Right, she added.
