233g-heroin smuggler gets 15 years

AN African drug smuggler who carried more than 200 grams of heroin in his body when he arrived at Pudong International Airport last fall was sentenced to 15 years in prison for drug smuggling, the Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People's Court said yesterday.

Gaylaw Bomgombe, 32, whose nationality has not been confirmed, was also fined 30,000 yuan (US$4,765) and will be deported from China after serving his sentence, the court ruled.

The court said that after Bomgombe arrived on a flight from Bangkok, Thailand, last October 5, a routine X-ray check by customs officials found suspicious items in his stomach and intestines.

Bomgombe admitted swallowing foreign objects while being questioned.

During his stay in the hospital, 46 cylindrical objects wrapped with plastic tape were eliminated from Bomgombe's body, and 15 were found to contain heroin weighing a total of 232.8 grams, prosecutors said.
