25 detained for running counterfeit booze plant
TWENTY-FIVE people have been detained on suspicion of being members of a criminal gang that produced and sold fake and potentially harmful versions of well-known liquors, Xin’an Evening News reported yesterday.
Shanghai police began investigating the case after a man complained of “almost going blind” after drinking Wuliangye — one of the most popular spirits in China — at a birthday party in May last year, the report said.
The supplier of the liquor, which was later found to be fake, was traced to Wuhu, a city in east China’s Anhui Province.
The following month, police from Shanghai and Wuhu raided a pig farm in Anhui that was being used by a criminal gang as a base for liquor manufacturing.
That then led officers to 10 other locations, where the 25 suspects were detained, the report said.
Police also seized tens of thousands of bottles of fake spirits and more than 20 million yuan (US$3 million) in cash, it said.
