25 held for selling fakes overseas
SHANGHAI police said yesterday they have busted a gang based in Southeast China’s Fujian Province which sold fake luxury fashion products for 70 million yuan (US$1.1 million) to overseas customers over the past few years.
The originals are worth over 700 million yuan in the market, according to Xinhua news agency.
Investigations started in August last year when the France-based Louis Vuitton Malletier reported a suspected scam to Shanghai police.
Police caught the 25-member gang, which had set up the Tengchuang Information Technology Company in 2009, during a raid on April 1. It is estimated that its monthly sales are over 2 million yuan.
The gang had created more than 200 English websites selling fake products of several luxury branded goods to customers in a dozen countries, including the United States, Canada, Britain, Greece and South Korea.
The products, which included bags, suitcases, watches and accessories, were mostly shipped from Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.
Nine people, including one in Shanghai, were caught last September for producing and selling fake Durex and Jissbon condoms for more than 1.2 million yuan.
