26 held over online job scam

POLICE have detained 26 people who allegedly made over 600,000 yuan (US$90,000) by posting fake job notices on classified advertising websites, officials said yesterday.

At least 100 people were charged 500 to 20,000 yuan each for “deposit money,” “training sessions” or “bribes,” according to police.

The gang, led by a 25-year-old man from east China’s Jiangxi Province surnamed Zhou, allegedly registered with 58.com, ganji.com and baixing.com, some of the largest classified ads websites, using a fake copy of Shanghai Meiyue Hotel Management Co’s business license. He claimed to be looking to hire drivers, warehouse workers and waiters, and offered salaries well above the market rate.

The gang then charged unsuspecting victims fees for arranging “job interviews” in Xuhui and Yangpu districts, police said.

This type of fraud is on the rise. In the first half of this year, 427 suspects were arrested in 124 cases, an increase of over 10 percent over the same period last year, police said.

In another recent case, a 26-year-old man from south China’s Guangdong Province surnamed Zou allegedly defrauded an online shopping website out of 1.4 million yuan using the name of one of its third-party shop owners whose account information he managed to obtain. Zou is awaiting trial in Songjiang District, police said.
