28 years is not too late to pay back dues
RUIJIN Hospital was in for a surprise yesterday after a woman paid up her dues to the hospital after 28 years.
The hospital treated the woman from Zhejiang Province for severe burns in 1988.
The woman, surnamed Lu, owed the hospital about 5,100 yuan (US$750) when she was discharged after nearly three months of treatment which cost her about 25,000 yuan. Her family paid up most of the bill but could not raise the rest of the cash.
Yesterday, Lu’s niece, surnamed Wang, finally cleared the dues.
Medical records showed that Lu, who was 25 years old then, suffered from 88 percent burns.
The local hospitals in Daishan County in Zhoushan City could not provide her with the necessary treatment.
Wang claimed Lu always wanted to pay back but poor health held her back.
Shi Qiongxian, vice director of the accounting department of the hospital, said very few people who owed money in the 1980s bothered to pay back their debts.
“There was no medical insurance that time, and some patients would owe money to the hospital,” Shi said.
