3 arrested for contact lens sales
THREE people have been arrested for selling unauthorized imported contact lenses and contact lens solution, according to Pudong New Area prosecutors.
Over a two-year period from July 2014, the three sold products totaling 14.75 million yuan (US$2.14 million), prosecutors said, adding that in a raid on their warehouses last July, police seized 1.14 million contact lenses and 130,000 bottles of contact lens solution, valued at nearly 28 million yuan
Prosecutors said they sold brands such as bebe, von and sio, which were legal and genuine, but were imported and sold illegally.
“The goods were transported from South Korea to Hong Kong and went through customs clearance procedure in Shenzhen. Then, they were sent to my warehouse in Pudong,” said the alleged ringleader surnamed Zhuo.
These brands were not authorized by the country’s food and drug administration to be sold on the domestic market, said prosecutors.
They added that contact lenses were classified as medical equipment in China and a specific license for selling them was required.
Zhuo said he had signed an agreement with several medical equipment firms, “borrowing” their license to bypass the customs check. Prosecutors said Zhuo had sold the products on the Internet, including the Tmall shopping platform.
To promote the sales, one of the three accused, a wholesaler surnamed Li, had paid celebrities to advertise on Weibo accounts, prosecutors said.
