3 arrested for threatening rape victim

PUTUO District People’s Procuratorate arrested a man for allegedly threatening a rape victim after his younger brother was detained as a suspect.

Two of his relatives were also arrested for obstructing a witness from giving testimony.

The three of them made threatening phone calls to her and her friends to force her to change their testimony, prosecutors said.

In April this year, a man surnamed Niu received a call from his younger brother’s friend who told him his brother was arrested for rape in Shanghai.

Niu then asked his two cousins to go to the city and check out the details.

One of the cousins got in touch with the alleged rape victim, surnamed Lin, and expressed regret and apologized several times. He insisted on meeting her. When they met, Lin refused his request to change her testimony with the police.

The trio then tracked down Lin and her boyfriend in their hometown in Shandong Province. This time they promised to pay her 80,000 yuan (US$12,561) as compensation if she changed her testimony.

Lin again rejected their plea. Later she found out they called her and her boyfriend from different numbers. They started to threaten her and said they would ruin her life.

Soon after, Lin’s friends and other contacts also started receiving crank calls.

Eventually, she relented and agreed to change her testimony after they said they could do anything to her.

On April 28, Lin told police that the suspect was her boyfriend who wanted to split with her, and so she cooked up the rape story. Finding her testimony suspicious, police got to the bottom of it and learnt of the threatening calls. The three were later arrested.
