3 go to jail for role in corruption scandal
A trio involved in a corruption scandal was sent to jail yesterday by Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court.
From 2002 to 2014, Jiang Jianming, Hua Dongping and Liu Geng took advantage of their positions to help others obtain contracts in return for bribes of 12.2 million yuan (US$1.84 million). They invested their ill-gotten gains and profited 29 million yuan, the court said.
Jiang is the former deputy president of Donghua University, Hua former vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the People’s Congress of Hongkou District, and Liu former general manager of a company affiliated to the university.
Prosecutors said Jiang had been the executive of that company, and Hua had been the deputy general manager. Liu and Hua had also been senior managers of another company affiliated to the university.
From 2004 to 2012, the trio fabricated contracts and embezzled 7.15 million yuan from the two companies.
Over the period, Jiang and Liu siphoned off a further 29.39 million yuan for personal profit, including 19.8 million yuan used to buy property and for investing.
When auditors launched investigations in 2013, Hua and Liu destroyed the accounting records.
As the three admitted guilt and had returned their illegal funds, they were granted lighter sentences.
Jiang was sentenced to 20 years behind bars and fined 2 million yuan. Hua was jailed for 15 years and fined 1.6 million yuan, and Liu received an 18-year sentence and a 2.1 million yuan fine.
